“How many people does a cake serve?” is the question we answer most on WhatsApp. Order too small and someone misses out; order too big and half the cake sits in the fridge for a week. This simple guide gives you the numbers we use in our own kitchen.
Cake size and servings at a glance
| Cake weight | Party slices | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 500 gm (half kg) | 4 to 6 | A couple, a small family dinner |
| 1 kg | 8 to 10 | A family birthday at home |
| 1.5 kg | 12 to 15 | Family plus a few friends |
| 2 kg | 16 to 20 | A home party or a small office team |
| 3 kg | 24 to 30 | A bigger party or an office floor |
| 5 kg | 40 to 50 | A first birthday in a hall, a function |
These are party slices, about the size you would serve on a paper plate with snacks. If cake is the only dessert after dinner, plan for slightly bigger slices and go one size up.
How many people does a cake serve at an office?
At work, people take smaller pieces, often standing up. A 2 kg cake easily covers 20 to 25 people and a 3 kg cake 30 or more. Square cakes are easier to cut into neat pieces, which is why offices often choose them. See our 2 kg cakes and 3 kg cakes.
Kids parties
Children eat less cake but there are always more adults than planned. For a party with 15 kids and their parents, a 3 kg cake is safe. For a first birthday in a banquet hall, go for a 5 kg cake or a tiered cake.

Does the design change the size?
Yes. Carved cakes, number cakes and doll cakes need a minimum size so the shape holds, which is why some designs start at 1.5 kg or 2 kg. Fondant decorations add a little weight but not servings. Tiered cakes look bigger than they are, so check the weight, not the height.
Our practical rule
Count the guests, divide by 9 and round up to the nearest size. Thirty guests means about 3.3, so order a 3 kg cake if there are other desserts and a 4 kg cake if there are not.

Tiered cakes: how many people do they serve?
A tiered cake serves by weight, just like a single cake. A 5 kg three tier cake serves the same 40 to 50 people as a 5 kg single cake. The difference is the look: tiers are taller and make a statement on a stage or a big table. Wedding style slices are thinner, so a tiered cake at a wedding can stretch further.
How to cut a cake so it goes further
- Round cakes: cut a circle about 5 cm in from the edge, slice the outer ring into thin pieces, then cut the centre.
- Square cakes: cut a grid of straight lines. You get neat, equal pieces with no waste.
- Use a hot knife: dip the knife in hot water and wipe it between cuts for clean slices.
